4 Lessons Learned from Popular YouTube Users about Growing a Community

If you’ve spent time on the internet, you have probably heard or seen Psy’s Gangnam Style video which has already hit over 100 million hits and is slowly taking over the world. I’m sure some of you know the chorus of the song and some of you secretly dance to this song before.

Of course I don’t go onto youtube just to watch his video, I find myself going to YouTube a couple times a day and getting glued to the screen watching many videos of cats news, comedies and many other channels which inspired me to write this post today as I believe there are lessons that we can learn from popular YouTube users on creating a community.

What can we learn from popular YouTube users about growing a community

1. Be entertaining

Most of the youtube channels I subscribed to are entertaining in a humorous way. This is obviously not for all. You don’t need to be funny to be entertaining. There are many ways of being entertaining besides being funny. Be entertaining in your own way and most importantly be YOU.

Gary Vaynerchuck is a great example of someone who is entertaining. He is so passionate in every of his videos and talks, you get entertained watching him as you feel his passion in his voice.

2. Be Consistent

What do most YouTubers’ have in common? They are consistent. Take @EpicMealTime for example, every Tuesday they come up with crazy videos that are over the top. They create over the top meals that are not only high in calorie, but entertaining to watch too. They have been coming up with videos for over a year while most people thought they would stop making videos by now. To date, they have over 450 million views on their YouTube channel.

3. Be a guest on other channels

For singers who were new and do not have many subscribers, they would be guest on established singers/bands channels on YouTube and sing a duet showcasing their talent which helps them to gain new subscribers for their channel.

The same lessons applies for us who wants to grow a community, if you have a new blog which doesn’t have many readers, you can showcase your experience and expertise by guest posting on other blogs.

4. Get community to participate

How do we get the community to participate? By asking them questions of course. The best way to get comments on your blog or on your guest post is by asking questions.

Phillip DeFranco is one of my favourite YouTube channels which has a daily video where he talks about the latest news which caught his attention and things that matters to him. He ends every video with a question or questions which are related to the news. He takes it further by rewarding commenter’s with gifts such as $100 Amazon gift cards.

As bloggers, writers, or on social network, we need to be consistent coming up with contents and most importantly SHOW UP. (note to self)

What do you think? Are there any other lessons we can learn from YouTuber stars? Love to hear your thoughts below.
