How To Run A Contest On Facebook

Contests have been a touchy subject ever since Facebook changed the rules and removed many pages that weren’t abiding by them. But there is a way to legally run a contest and here is how you do it.

1. Create Offer / Prize

Starting from the beginning you need to make sure your offer is worthwhile for people to part with their information for. I am not going to like your page and enter my details for a chance to win a 5% off coupon or a $10 gift, make sure it is worthwhile. Do some research on composing the right landing page and text to use in your offer to get the maximum response. You need to direct your giveaway to your customers highest need.

2. Finding An Application To Host It

You must use your website or a Facebook application to accept details of the contest or promotion to abide by Facebook’s Promotion Guidelines. You CAN make it a requirement to like a page to enter, but they must also enter in the application or your website afterwards. The reason here is you can’t just enter anyone who becomes a fan of your page, which is fair enough if you ask me. I don’t want to be called out for winning something on a page I liked if I didn’t specifically enter in the competition.
Another serious point, you can not notify, contact or call out the winner on Facebook in any way. You must contact them via the Facebook application or other contact details. Here are some Facebook applications you can use to require people to like your page first and enter in the contest.

Create successful contests

Free Guide

Binkd Promotion Platform- A social media contest platform for Facebook or your website. Many different contest types and custom integrations. Create free account

Free Twitter contest app and low cost Facebook contests.

Wildfire - Facebook contest app and social media analytics, their lowest package costing $5 per campaign and 99 cents per day.
Votigo – again not free and possibly very expensive but another option to look into if you are serious about contests.
Involver – a huge range of applications and one that hosts contests.

Bulbstorm – an interesting twist on contests where people submit and vote ideas.

3. Installing Your Application

That is all dependent upon the application you choose and they all have support and walk-throughs for this. All you need to do now is create your contest and install your application and get a promotion going.

4. Get A Promotion Strategy

Just creating a contest isn’t going to get you the response you want. Make sure you promote it in places such as:
  1. Your website
  2. Ask others to promote it to their lists
  3. Pay Per Click Advertising
  4. Facebook Advertising
  5. Email
Also please read the Facebook’s Promotion Guidelines to ensure you follow all their rules, otherwise your page could be deleted.

      Hi Liz

Just letting you know that I have quickly created a free platform for promotions using Facebook. It is a slightly different way than the other paid option but can create more exposure.

Would love to get your feedback if you are interested – http://promotion.binkd.com/.

The more feedback I get on it the more likely it will be turned into a full fledged product.

looks good, but are there any free ones?

    • Anonymous

I did search for free ones but could not find any. For the small price I would recommend going with one of these paid ones, it will result in a higher conversion anyway.

      Hi Pedro.

I have just quickly created a promotion platform that you can use for free. Please let me know if it is something you would be interested in using. The more feedback I get on it the more likely I will be to push this product into Binkd’s main product line and hence be expanded and fully supported.

One way to do the contest for free is to run it through mail chimp. That way, the entire process will be automated and you can either place the form on your site (embed) or link to it. You can gather whatever information you design from the visitor and export it all to an excel spreadsheet. Once finished, you can use random.org to pick a random number and that will be your winner. You should already have the users email address (from MailChimp).

Let me know what you all think about this strategy.

Thanks Elise, another great method. I use mail chimp myself, though haven’t for a promotion.

I like the Binkd sweepstakes product but have not been able to successfully deploy it. Keep getting ASP errors here and there. I like that it’s free compared to wildfire and some of the others mentioned here. Still a little buggy but i’m excited to see the product develop and will keep my eye on binkd to see whats next.
