How To Run A Facebook Competition Without Being Banned

Over the last year I have seen a few pages disappear from Facebook (some with 10′s of thousands of followers) due to not complying with Facebook’s terms and conditions. It is really is quite sad because:
“Facebook will delete your page or account if you violate any of their terms, without any warning or chance to change, regardless of whether you knew or did not know about the terms or condition you were/are violating.”
You may think that is harsh, but if you read the terms and conditions you signed up for then they are completely within their rights to do so.

Facebook Promotion Guidelines Most People Break

One of the more common reasons a Facebook page can be deleted is due to improperly running a competition or contest on Facebook. These include things such as:
  1. Tagging yourself in a photo on Facebook to enter
  2. Automatically entering in a competition by liking a page (you can have a liking of a page as a prerequisite before entering but not as the entire entry process)
  3. The most likes on a post win
  4. Writing a status update to enter a competition
  5. Notifying winners through Facebook
  6. etc, etc

How To Run A Contest Within The Terms And Condition On Facebook

There are number of things you need:
  1. A place to host or run the competition (either a 3rd party application or your own site)
  2. A way to notify entrants, via your own email or a 3rd party application
You can do the following on Facebook:
  1. Place a link on Facebook to the competition
  2. Place a link on Facebook to another website that contains the winners
  3. Place a tab on your Facebook page that loads a Facebook app, that runs the competition
If you want a 3rd party application to do this you can use Binkd’s Promotion Platform.

Adam, I know you are not allowed to notify winners via Facebook, but after I have notified them via email, can I then announce the names of the winners on my Facebook wall since technically I have already notified them?  I have used Binkd several times already by the way and so far, so good :>

Thanks for the feedback :) Regarding notifying winners on Facebook even after notifying them via email I think still breaks the rules of Facebook’s promotion guidelines. To be on the safe side I recommend writing a blog post or article on your site with the winners and posting a link to that on your Facebook wall.

Thanks for the info Adam! Would it also be against the rules if it was the most likes on a photo uploaded by us wins?

Yes, unfortunately that would also be against the rules. You can’t use any native Facebook functionality as the voting mechanism.

Hi Adam. Instead of (or in addition to) “liking” your page, can you ask entrants to “share” their favorite photo from your gallery as part of the contest prerequisites before entering the contest via the 3rd party application?

    • binkd

      Hi Tanna
You can’t force people to do this as it is against the terms and conditions of Facebook. You can request they do however. For example in a Binkd contest you can get them to like your page, then it asks if you want to refer/share the contest to others. If someone signs up under that referral then they get an extra entry into the contest. So it can be done, but you can’t force them to.
      Thanks
      Adam

Hi, I’d like to make it clear because now I’m in the fog. Can I paste on my Facebook profile a link to my webpage and write info about a competition for example “Do you want to win the newest album of … ….. click this link: http://www……... pl” ? Thanks

Hi Tom. Yes you can mention contests and provide a link to them, the main points Facebook is trying to make, is not to run ANY part of the contest on Facebook. For example, announcing winners, getting people to like or comment to enter a contest, etc.
